    No pandemic can stop a Batang Kuwentista!

    Let our comeback be greater than our setback. Amid the challenges posed by the ongoing CoVid 19 crisis, bigger and better than ever, Lampara Books adapted to the new normal as it launched online for the first time this year its annual children storytelling competition, Batang Lampara Batang Kuwentista 2021: Online Children’s Storytelling Competition

    In these trying times, staying at home did not hinder hundreds of talented Batang Kuwentista across the nation from igniting our imagination and bringing us to a one-of-a-kind journey through their storytelling. 

    Batang Kuwentista 2021 Winners

    The judges determined the winners from the outstanding six (6) finalists who have made it through the semi-finals. They were evaluated according to their voice quality, stage presence, story interpretation, delivery, facial expressions, and body language. The winners were announced online on the Lampara Books official Facebook page on August 31, 2021.

    Kali Noelle Ibay Soriano from St. Scholastica’s Academy of Marikina (with an average score of 97.67%) bagged the title of Batang Lampara Batang Kuwentista 2021 as she won the grand prize. She will bring home a plaque, certificate, and PHP 20,000.00 cash prize. Aizefia Daffnie Paras from Ianthe Christian Academy garnered an average score of 95.67%, earning her the first runner-up title. She will receive a medal, certificate, and PHP 10,000.00 cash prize. The four (4) finalists, who will receive a medal, certificate, and PHP 3,000. 00 cash prize each are as follows (in no particular order): Anais Saabela G. Tarun from Meridian International Learning Experience, Gianna Erin S. Camaya from St. Scholastica’s Academy of Marikina, Leuan Art Olivares from Notre Dame of Greater Manila, and Daniel Joshua D. Paronda from the School of St. Anthony.

    The board of judges was composed of veteran actor and master storyteller, Luisito Pascua who is also best known as “Kuya Bodjie”; Frederick Sotto Perez, the president of the Reading Association of the Philippines; and Alexine Parreno, the owner of the online bookshop, Pumplepie Books & Happiness, which carry curated Filipino children’s books. 

    Online Process and Elimination

    The competition started on June 1, 2021, where hundreds of Batang Kuwentista submitted their entries through the official online registration link. Twenty-five (25) semi-finalists were selected from more than a hundred qualified entries. The list of semi-finalists was announced online on July 16, 2021. Each of the semi-finalists was given a chance to choose a book from selected Lampara titles to produce a new storytelling video for the Finals. 

    All semi-finalist videos were uploaded on the Lampara Books official Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/lamparabooks) on August 16, 2021 at 12 noon. The storytelling video with the highest number of post engagements (total reactions, shares, comments, and clicks) on August 20, 2021 at 6:00 pm automatically entered the top 6 finalists. Daniel Joshua D. Paronda from the School of St. Anthony had 88,402 total post engagements, making him the winner of the Viewers’ Choice.

    Batang Lampara Batang Kuwentista children’s storytelling competition has been an annual event hosted by Lampara Books since 2016. As this year’s competition was held online for the first time, Lampara books believe that going into a virtual platform will open an opportunity to more aspiring Batang Kuwentista as it is now more accessible, convenient, and cost-effective. This nationwide event aims to showcase and celebrate the talent of Filipino children in bringing stories to life.
